LET THE JOURNEY
BEGIN
Down by the River sits on 70 acres of wilderness that borders both sides of the Baddeck River, providing true privacy. It's a landscape that includes wetlands, mature forest, a sprawling apple orchard, open field, new tree growth, mountain views, and riverside cliffs.
Yet we're less than ten minutes to the village of Baddeck — the beginning and end of the Cabot Trail.
THE LAND
Life is simpler down by the river.
Where you wake up with the sun to the sound of eagles, and go to bed under a blanket of stars while the coyotes howl. Where TV is a crackling fire, city noise is replaced by the flow of river water, and the need to "hurry up" just doesn't exist.
As river dwellers ourselves, we know these things firsthand, and invite you to to live this way, if only for a little while. Off-grid, fully recharged.
Down by the River is a labour of love.
We came to this place in search of something more. Standing barefoot in the river by a deer drinking out of the water, we knew we had found it in Cape Breton. Jobs were quit. Bags were packed. We were riverbound.
Tree by tree, we cut our way into our new home until we made it to the water. Living off-grid down by the river, our new lives and work began.
Every path, view and shelter was made with intention. It was crafted over two and a half years, not assembled in six months. Built by our very own hands, not a team of contractors. Creating secluded, unforgettable experiences, not the mass produced usual. It was made with thought, and with love.
We hope you enjoy these secluded hideaways we've crafted to share with friends, old and new.
THE STORY
THE WAY
We're lucky enough to share this land with eagles, beavers, coyotes, bobcats, fox, deer, moose, trout, salmon, black bears, and many other creatures.
We don't feed animals or leave anything behind except footprints.
Out of respect for the wildlife and for everyone's safety, we ask that you do the same.
